History

North Florida's most prominent resort address certainly had humble beginnings. At the turn of the 20th century, Ponte Vedra Beach was a pristine wilderness of sand dunes, swamps, alligators and palmetto trees. The region first captured attention in 1912 when a vein rich in minerals was discovered running through the dunes. The site soon evolved into a frontier mining town with worker's quarters, a post office and general store. A mining corporation, The National Lead Company, purchased the rugged outpost as well as several thousand acres .and, in support of the U.S. war effort during World War I, mined the area for valuable ore. When the war ended, mining operations ceased and the company began to sell off its holdings in the area.

The transformation from mining town to nationally recognized seaside community began in the early 1920s when local land planners skillfully developed the area to maximize its natural beauty. With an underlying respect for the balance between man and nature, a quaint seaside village evolved with stately, pastel-colored homes featuring tree-shaded lawns—a community of graceful proportions that reflected an elegant era in America’s history.

Resort life at Ponte Vedra Beach dates back to 1928 with the celebrated opening of Ponte Vedra Inn & Club, a playground for the well-heeled. From the boardrooms of Wall Street to the social registers of America, word spread quickly of the charming seaside retreat on Florida's northeast shore. The first guests came from such faraway places as Michigan, Rhode Island and Connecticut. They came for the sun, sand, surf and sports. America’s finest families came to socialize with one another.

This splendid heritage continues today. In 1997, Ponte Vedra Inn & Club and The Lodge & Club combined resources to create a collection of resort experiences known as Ponte Vedra Beach Resorts. While the two award-winning resorts are uniquely distinct, they both maintain the industry's highest standards of hospitality. An expertly trained staff of more than 700 shares one common goal: to provide an extraordinary level of personalized service to each and every guest. For over 85 years, this standard has been synonymous with the Ponte Vedra experience.
